The 2011 JazzLab exhibits and dismantles the recording process by turning the second floor of the BCA Center into a recording studio. JazzLab invites the participation of attendees through question and answer sessions with artists, engineers and producers. Access to popular social media outlets is available in the BCA Center and visitors are encouraged to contribute to the musical conversation both on and off site. JazzLab Studio sessions will be video webcasted by Cortexand air live on The Radiator, 105.9FM, WOMM-LP and online at theradiator.org.

SNARKY PUPPY
Jazzlab features a host of eclectic and celebrated musical innovators in jazz and its later predecessors, hip –hop and funk and afro-beat music. Among the most widely known are the electrifying, 9-piece outfit, Snarky Puppy, led by virtuosic electric bass player, Michael League. This fast rising super-group is known for its deep grooves and genre colliding improvisation. Snarky Puppy gravitates toward unconventional performances and hip- educational events in the effort to more fully immerse in communities while on the tour. They will be joined in the studio by Verve records vocalist Lucy Woodward.
Jazzlab experimentation continues with a hybrid super-group featuring Vermont and New Orleans musicians. Drummer Gabe Jarrett, Bassist Robinson Morse and flutist/vocalist Heloise Williams join forces with and some of the best emerging artists in New Orleans; Percussionist and effects genius, Justin Peake and avant-garde composer and band leader Jonathan Freilich. Jazzlab records and streams the outcome of this unique collaboration live and remixes some of Williams, pre-recorded material with the new hybrid group.

BARIKA
The final day of Jazzlab brings Vermont-based Afro-hipsters, Barika, into the studio to record two tracks for inclusion on the bands upcoming full-length debut.
Question and answer sessions will deconstruct the studio experience from a novice perspective and open forum sessions will focus on the lingering necessity of quality recorded to the success of today’s touring musician. .
