Young Tradition Festival: Martha Pellerin Tribute Concert

May 5, 2019, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

In late April and early May 2019, Young Tradition Vermont will bring together young people involved in traditional music and dance, and those who support and are interested in what they do, in an effort to share with the community young trad singers, players and dancers and what they bring to the world. At the Young Tradition Festival, young folks are the focus, supported by their teachers, mentors, friends, and families. With opportunities to interact with others, young people can use what has inspired them, what they have learned, and opportunities to perform to inspire others.

Part of Young Tradition Festival is the annual tribute concert, this year for Martha Pellerin. Martha Pellerin's life mission was promoting an understanding of French-Canadian and Franco-American culture through traditional music. In Franco-American Vermont, all roads led to Martha, an organizer, promoter, song collector, and educator. She played the accordion and formed the band Jeter le Pont, and was the driving force behind many musical events like Barre Heritage Days, La Danse Des Enfants, and the St. Jean Baptiste Day Festival. Martha was a preserver of oral tradition and cultural heritage, who took her music all over New England and to Europe. Her extensive collection of French-Canadian songs & recordings is archived at the Vermont Folklife Center.

Performers at the tribute concert include Benoit Bourque and Antoine Pigeon-Bourque, Pete's Posse, Michele Choiniere, National Heritage Fellows Don and Cindy Roy, Claude Méthé and Dana Whittle, Kim Chase, and Carmen Beaudoin Bombardier. More details on performers at the Young Tradition Vermont website.
