Thomas Brennan: Darkness from Light

April 10, 2015 - June 20, 2015

Using ‘photogenic drawing,’ a camera-less photography technique pioneered by 19th century photographer and inventor, Henry Fox-Talbot, Thomas Brennan explored issues of mortality and metaphorical implication through his careful documentation of objects from nature, now in the collections of museums across the United States and Europe.  Animal specimens, instruments of scientific measure, and molecular models were captured in the format of shadows, which Brennan stressed were the “most perfect and least perfect records.” The result was an unexpected sense of beauty that straddled narrative photography and the analytics of science, providing the archived natural world with a modernized aesthetic as well as a renewed breath of life.
