I’ve attempted to adhere to the basic rules of abstraction or color field painting while resurrecting my identity as an artist. The principles involve the relationship of the line, color and shape to the edge of the canvas. The composition should allow for everything to be seen as one versus an individual shape, line or color. Meaning, no part of the piece should stick out more than the other. There is no foreground or background as with realism. It’s a constant dance of push/pull. These are the things my idols Pollock, Rothko, Klee, Kandinsky, Miro, Hoffman, Frankenthaler, Kline and Motherwell all wrestled with a long time ago. Knowing when to stop painting tends to be the hardest decision to make.
