Under the Influence

April 15, 2016 - June 18, 2016

Opening Reception: FRIDAY April 15, 2016 5-8pm

Nissa Kauppila, Erika Lawlor Schmidt

Influences from Asia are unmistakable in an impressive exhibition of two artists whose work plays upon a fine balance between matter and space. Schmidt, a student of Zen philosophy and Indian metaphysics, applies these principles to her work to influence how form emerges from negative space. Kauppila is currently painting in a year-long residency in Foshan, China and practices as an apprentice painter under the master silk painter Lin Bo. This will be the first exhibition of her work created in China.  Kauppila’s unique painting style and interest in the natural world has evolved with her use of new materials. Her paintings continue to create a sense of tension and fragility, yet a new focus on macro subject matter has emerged, such as the study of single feathers or flower blossoms.
