Burlington City Arts and the Vermont Metro Gallery presents new work by Sage Lewis in the exhibition Fixed/Fluxed on view through October 12016. Lewis, who is a Vermont native currently based in Tunbridge, has recently returned from an artist-in-residence fellowship teaching university students in Doha, Qatar. Lewis’s experimental photo-based works merge methods of painting and drawing with marks of digital and analog photographic processes. Her work in the Vermont Metro Gallery at BCA includes 18 pieces that were made in Doha, London, Vermont, and most recently in Rochester, New York during a residency at the Visual Studies Workshop in May of 2016. Lewis has exhibited nationally and internationally but this is her first exhibition in her home state of Vermont.

Lewis’s work, located on the 4th floor of BCA, is part of the group exhibition titled Fixed/Fluxed on view in BCA’s first and second floor galleries celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Seven Below Artist Residency Program. Lewis was an artist-in-residence at Seven Below during the summer of 2014 and much of the work she produced there traveled with her to Qatar where it was exhibited at the Virginia Commonwealth University’s branch campus known as VCUQatar. About her time in Qatar, Lewis said she was influenced by the juxtaposition of the desert landscape and the unique architecture of Doha’s urban environment. “I began taking samples and observations to the studio in ways similar to an archaeologist but with different tools and objectives. The sensation of losing one’s sense of scale in the vast blankness of the desert pointed me towards a concept of feeling one’s way around by touching the surface of the earth.” This tactile way of exploring the world is echoed in Lewis’s studio process as she works with textured surfaces of fabric and paper. The texture and grain that is present in materials such as dry pigment, silk scrim, half-tone dots and pixels, relate directly to the grains of sand and the surface of the desert. Perceptual interferences Lewis observed such as heat waves and dust, appear in the form of wave patterns from Shibori-dyed fabric and digital aberrations from the screen and the scanner. For Lewis, the process of building a print, drawing, or photographic image in layers is evocative of the changing urban landscape in Qatar. “The city is in a constant state of flux due to rapid construction. Finding reliable points of reference and navigation are a challenge and a noticeable part of everyday life in Qatar, which has set out to create an international hub for education and research where I was located in Education City, Doha. I was continually observing a wide range of architecture from the ‘starchitect’ mega-contemporary buildings to the aging vernacular structures from decades earlier, as they are being torn down and constructed as something new.” In addition to large-scale inkjet prints, pastel and laser toner drawings, and color laser prints over watercolor paintings, Fixed/Fluxed also includes three carbon prints which Lewis produced with the help of a faculty research grant from VCUQatar. 

About Sage Lewis:

Sage Lewis (born 1981, Waterville, Vermont) holds an MFA in Painting & Drawing from The Ohio State University and recently completed a 10-month Artist-in-Residence Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. Prior to her studies at OSU, Lewis lived in Portland, Maine for 12 years where she earned her BFA in Painting with an Art History minor from Maine College of Art. She held positions in arts administration and curating most recently at the Portland Museum of Art, while also exhibiting her own work nationally. Lewis is interested in the connections between material process and concept and works through drawing, sculpture, prints, and photography to translate images into multiple outcomes. Her work is informed by the history of science, optics, and perspective and she often draws upon architecture, archaeology, and geology as source material. Recent work reflects her experience of living in Qatar where dramatic shifts in scale and orientation characterized the desert and urban environment. A sense of heightened observation led her to an archeological approach to interpreting landscape and architectural structures. Lewis has recently exhibited at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, the Denison Museum in Granville, Ohio, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Hamad bin Khalifa University Art Gallery in Doha, Qatar. She lives in Tunbridge, Vermont.

About Burlington City Arts and the Seven Below Arts Initiative: 

The Seven Below Arts Initiative was established to provide artists practicing eclectic and emerging art forms with support to make art, and to enrich the Vermont community through the arts. The Seven Below artist residency, facilitated by BCA, brings up to six artists per season to live and create art at The Barn, a uniquely restored property on 65 acres offering magnificent views of Mt. Mansfield and the Green Mountains. The 200-year-old Alan Irish Barn was reconstructed in 1996 and served as the recording and rehearsal facility for Phish, Trey Anastasio, and other musicians. Residents are selected from a diverse range of local, national and international applicants, and are each provided with a $2,000 materials and living stipend to help support the creation of new work. Since 2006, Seven Below has granted more than 50 artist residency opportunities, presented numerous public lectures and art exhibitions, and has formed a critical arts dialogue between local arts educators, students, artists, and the greater Burlington community.
