Burlington City Arts

BCA Artist Relief Fund

Interested in contributing to the fund?

The community will need artists more than ever when we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. In the meantime, artists are facing unprecedented challenges to their creative practices. To support artist resilience, the BCA Foundation is making funding accessible to Burlington’s creative individuals at this critical time through the BCA Artist Relief Fund.

The BCA Artist Relief Fund provides grants of up to $500 to Burlington-based individual artists who are in need of additional financial assistance now and have lost income due to the cancellation of a specific, scheduled arts opportunity between March 16 and June 30 due to COVID-19. Funded artists are asked to provide community benefit through the arts in the future in the City of Burlington.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis until funds run out and we will continue to fundraise to increase our impact.

Purpose of Funds

The purpose of these funds is to support artists who need immediate help and encourage their future contributions to Burlington’s creative life. Funds may be used immediately to recoup financial losses for Burlington-based artists caused by venue cancelations, the artist’s compromised immune system, or other COVID-19 related reasons. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Performances in all performing arts disciplines

  • Readings, panels, and speaking opportunities

  • Classes, workshops, and school closures

  • Installation of artwork in a gallery or public setting where a stipend would have been provided

Who May Apply

Individual artists who:

  • Are 18 years or older

  • Meet the definition of Burlington-based as follows:

              - Artists who live in Burlington

              - Artists who rent studio space in Burlington

              - Artists who teach art classes in their own studios or for other organizations in Burlington

              - Artists who perform or exhibit in Burlington venues

  • Are in financial need

  • Work in any of the following disciplines: visual arts; music; dance; theater; performance art; literary arts; design (includes fashion, industrial, graphic, theater, architectural, etc.); curatorial; media arts/film; or interdisciplinary arts.

  • Can demonstrate Burlington-based artistic activity in preferred medium for a minimum of the past 12 months

  • Can submit a W-9 form to accept funding

  • Can provide dates of canceled events and associated lost income after March 16, 2020

Artists who have not received funding from the Vermont Arts Council’s artist relief fund will be prioritized for funding.

What This Program Does Not Fund

At this time, this program is not available to compensate for potential loss of business, such as loss of potential art sales, future bookings, or engagements that were not finalized prior to March 16.

Grant Amounts

These grants are designed to support as many artists as possible. Grant amounts range from $100-$500.  Grant awards will not exceed the lesser of $500 or lost income from canceled events. Grant amounts are dependent upon existing funding and will be awarded on a rolling basis until funds run out.

Requests will be processed in the order they are received, and notifications will be made as soon as possible. We will do our best to move quickly and process checks within 2 weeks of application receipt.

Applicants are required to submit a completed W-9 to receive funding. Grants may need to be claimed as income; please consult with a tax expert.

A copy of canceled contracts, MOUs, or agreements may be requested by the BCA Foundation, so artists are encouraged to maintain records related to the application if granted.
