Learn how to paint with nontoxic, water-soluble oils through fun exercises and studio work.  Discover a variety of painting techniques and learn how to apply composition, linear aspects, form and color theory to your work.  Using photographs and direct observational skills, we’ll work on landscapes and a still life.  This supportive class is a balance of studio time, group discussion and informal critique.  BCA provides shared paint, palettes, easels and painting trays.  Students are responsible for brushes and canvas, please see materials on the registration page.

Intermediate and advanced painters recharge your figure painting practice with a contemporary approach to the figure. Turn the page on traditional representation, using fresh color and dynamic composition to strengthen your personal expression. Work from live models each week, explore a variety of contemporary techniques with nontoxic water soluble oils, and get supportive feedback in a small group environment.  Students are responsible for brushes and canvas, please see materials on the registration page.

Learn how to paint with watercolor. This class will focus on observational painting from still life, figure, landscape and photos.  Students will paint on watercolor paper and will gain experience with composition, color theory, layering, light and shade. No experience necessary.  BCA provides paints, mixing trays, drawing paper, watercolor paper, pencils and erasers.  Students are responsible brushes, please see materials on the registration page.

Graphic Novel

Learn the art of visual storytelling through this immersive class in the comics discipline. Students will learn a broad range of techniques for communicating with both words and pictures, with an emphasis on drawing in pen and ink. The class will also review the work of a variety of cartoonists as inspiration for student work.  While drawing experience is not necessary for this class, students should be comfortable with and enjoy doodling. BCA will provide all basic materials.

Explore the analog darkroom and learn how to properly expose black and white film, process film into negatives, and make silver gelatin prints. Glaze Chemistry

For ceramics artists, glazing can be a daunting and mysterious process, part alchemy, part magic, and part pure luck. During this two-hour lecture, we will pull back the curtain to reveal the science behind this mysterious process. We will cover families or types of glazes, the breakdown of components in a glaze, common and less common raw materials, and the basics of what you can do to start making and troubleshooting your own glazes.

Live Stream Workshop with Didem Mert

Join BCA for a live streaming workshop with Didem Mert, as she demonstrates and discusses some of her signature forms and approaches to clay. This workshop will provide an opportunity to see Mert’s techniques in action, and a view into her studio at home in Kentucky. Topics covered will include Mert’s use of bisque molds, geometry and texture in creating her stacking bowls, berry baskets and drinking vessels. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the demonstrations, and in a formal Q&A at the conclusion of the workshop.

Kiln Basics

This one-night workshop will be an overview of the basics of operating and troubleshooting electric kilns. Topics covered will include understanding the cone scale, kiln anatomy and hardware, loading bisque and glaze firings, firing programs and basic kiln diagnostics. Time will also be reserved for students’ questions.

Pottery Decals

This one-night workshop will introduce students to the use of waterslide decals to add surface decoration to their ceramic art. Topics covered will include the history of ceramic decals, sourcing commercially printed decals, printing your own iron-rich decals, application of decals to pottery, firing and food safety. Following the presentation, students will have an opportunity to practice applying decals to pottery pieces. Note: Firing not included. All materials provided by BCA.

Linocut

In this three-week class, students will have the opportunity to create small designs with the relief technique of linoleum block printing. We will print these one color blocks by hand, and then add color by experimenting with watercolor paints.  This class is a fun opportunity to make cards, Valentine’s, gift tags, or art to share, since we will have the chance to print multiples once you make your block. Please bring ideas or sketches (8 x 10" or smaller) to the first class so we can get started right away!  All other materials will be provided.
