Working primarily in traditional mediums such as tempera and oil, Dara Theodora paints pieces that reflect personal anxieties, quiet dread, and the loneliness of moving through an alienating world. Literature, symbols, and myth influence her work. She uses familiar motifs and mythology to try to make sense of a culture in crisis.
In her compositions, Theodora experiment with different ways of seeing, such as parallax and multiple perspectives. Recently, she has incorporated codified visual systems (such as labanotation and blueprints) to give pieces a further fractured feeling. Hidden forms surface through pareidolia, and imperfections are celebrated. Her work is also shaped by my uprooted background, haunted Southern landscapes, and a deep love of circles.
