Volunteer

Volunteers play an integral role in our mission of creating a dynamic relationship between the arts and our community. Volunteers increase their own skills and knowledge through trainings and events, and we welcome volunteers who have an interest in the arts, regardless of their experience level. If you are interested in volunteering with Burlington City Arts, please complete a Volunteer Application.

Art from the Heart

Art from the Heart is currently seeking volunteers to visit patients and family members at UVM Medical Center and Children’s Hospital to help make the hospital a more comfortable and creative place through the arts. We visit patient rooms and waiting areas, working one on one and in small groups. A visit with a patient or family members can start as simply as talking about favorite TV shows and music. An Art from the Heart visit can be as complex as a painting party, creative writing session, or team art project. A lot of time it is a quick gifting of an art print and / or supplies and ideas to help spark creative expression. If you enjoy drawing, we create drawings for people on their door windows to personalize and beautify hospital rooms and units. No art skills are needed, just an enjoyment of the arts, and a compassionate approach. If you are interested please be prepared to also apply with UVM Medial Center, commit to a weekly shift (each shift is 3-4 hours long) for at least 6 months (we understand there will some pauses with travel, etc.) as it takes a while to get into the flow of Art from the Heart and being in the hospital spaces.

BCA Center Gallery and Visitors Services

Volunteers work to gain a deeper understanding of BCA while acting as representatives to the public. In the BCA Center, volunteers attend the gallery, interact with the public, assist with installations, assist with performance events, and provide general support to gallery staff.

BCA Exhibitions

Internships

Interns play a valuable role in keeping BCA running. With opportunities ranging from communications and marketing to gallery installation and event management, BCA offers our paid interns broad, multidimensional opportunities to gain professional experience while making new connections.

Currently seeking Fall Art Services Intern

General Purpose

To provide students with an opportunity to develop professional skills, knowledge and experience in exhibit installation, art handling practices, and what goes into preparing for an exhibit through a hands-on educational and professional experience as an adjunct to a student’s educational program or path of study at the University of Vermont or Saint Michael’s College. 
 
This internship will cover: 

  • Art hanging and handling skills 

  • Best practices specific to gallery installation

  • How to prepare exhibit-related materials

  • Gallery day to day and visitor services

  • Database management as relates to BCA’s Vermont Artist Database

  • Additional aspects of working in an arts organization 

 

Union Affiliation: Non-Union 
Pay Grade: Unpaid, for academic credit  
Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/week

Essential Job Functions

Support the Art Services Coordinator through assistance with off-site exhibition installations and related tasks, including: art hanging, handling, packing and transporting; related administrative functions and install preparation; updating and maintaining the artist database; assistance with special projects and other BCA functions as needed; in a professional arts organization/non-profit setting

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.

Availability 1-2 days per week (ideal candidate will be available Tuesdays during business hours for full day installs, and one partial flexible day for admin work) *Please include your availability for fall semester in your cover letter

Must be a student currently enrolled at University of Vermont or St. Michaels College taking a course for credit

Demonstrated interest in the arts (ideal candidate is currently pursuing a degree in studio art, art education, art history, museum or curatorial studies, or a related field)

Ability to assist with installation of artwork, including but not limited to lifting, use of a ladder, and use of basic tools. Must be able to lift 50 pounds

Familiarity working with a Windows OS, including knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software. Some experience with Excel preferred

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal 

Attention to detail, flexibility, willingness to learn and ability to follow instructions

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Ability to professionally represent Burlington City Arts in all interactions with artists, clients and the general public
