Schmidt trained in photojournalism and black & white photography -- and spent too many hours in the darkroom.

When the digital revolution happened, he started shooting seriously again and began doing commercial work. Clients included Stowe, Whiteface Mountain, Gore Mountain, Lake Placid Visitors Bureau, and others. Schmidt has done editorial work for the Burlington Free Press and Williston Observer, and images have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Entrepreneur Magazine, Motorcyclist Magazine, Sierra Club Magazine, Ski Magazine, Adirondack Sports and Fitness, Vermont Ski and Ride, Boston Magazine and others.

One of his specialties is doing large format panoramas. These can fill entire walls and bring some of Vermont’s beauty indoors.
