By nature of the medium, sculpture affects space in seen and unseen ways. By creating physical impositions and subconscious influences that change the way we navigate a room, sculpture offers the viewer unique clues about how to engage with it. Through the use of recognizable art-making tools, such as line, form, color, gesture, and scale, sculpture asks the viewer to move and share space. Exhibition artists Cathy Della Lucia and Lee Williams demystify the sometimes-unapproachable nature of three-dimensional art by utilizing elements of humor, color, and personal storytelling, building a metaphorical bridge for the viewer.
Working in multi-faceted forms and a wide array of materials, Williams and Della-Lucia explore idiosyncratic notions of sculpture and why it is generally unlike two-dimensional artwork. What’s the Difference? Sculptural Ideas challenges the way we think about physical space and invites our curiosity about the gap between looking and understanding when viewing this art form in the round.
